Stephens is licensed as a real estate broker in Texas and has been licensed in Massachusetts and Georgia. He holds a mortgage broker license in Texas where he is the mortgage broker for www.CelebrationLending.com. He also serves – from 1979 through the present, as the President and Broker of Record of deRaat Stephens, Inc. The firm acquired an ERA^® franchise in 1995 and does business in Houston, Texas as ERA^® Stephens Properties (www.erasp.com).

He was appointed by the Texas Real Estate Commission for a six-year term to the Texas Real Estate Broker-Lawyer Committee in 1993 and to the Texas Department of Savings and Mortgage Lending’s Mortgage Brokerage Advisory Committee for a three-year term in 2005, then reappointed for another three-years in 2008. George's REALTOR^® activities include serving on numerous committees at both the local, state, and national levels. He served as Chairman of the 26,000+ member, Houston Association of REALTORS^® ("H.A.R.") in 1998 and Chairman of the nearly 98,000 member Texas Association of REALTORS^® ("T.A.R.") in 2003.

The consumer resource column, "Ask George & Chuck," (co-authored with Charles J. Jacobus, J.D.) currently appears in the Houston Chronicle and TexasRealEstate.com. In 1997 he received the TAR Educator of the Year award for his years teaching CORE real estate (including Contracts) and mandatory continuing education courses. In 1998 H.A.R. recognized George’s teaching and technological contributions to the industry by naming its computer-equipped training facility the "George C. Stephens Technology Training Center."

George and Chuck co-author the book Texas Real Estate Brokerage and Law of Agency, now in its 5th edition..
